Don’t lose your voice - register to vote
15 March 2010
Manchester residents are being reminded that unless they are on the electoral register they won’t be able to vote in the forthcoming national and local elections.
Local Elections take place on Thursday 6 May and a General Election is also imminent and could be called at short notice.
Sir Howard Bernstein, (Acting) Returning Officer for Manchester, said: "These elections are a vital opportunity to influence decisions on important issues which affect all of our everyday lives.
"But to be able to vote you must be on the electoral register. If you are not on the register you will not be eligible to vote and you will lose your democratic voice."
Applying to be registered is quick and easy. However, as the register is published once a year and updated monthly, it's essential that the City Council's elections unit receives applications as soon as possible.
Residents who have changed address, or name (for instance if their surname has changed through marriage) since registering to vote are also encouraged to contact the elections unit to make sure their details are up to date.
Anyone who is on the electoral register can apply for a postal vote. The absolute latest date by which your application must be received is 11 working days before an election - so people are advised to get their applications in as soon as possible.
To register to vote, check whether we have your up-to-date details or answer any other electoral queries, contact our elections team on 0161 2341819. Alternatively, visit the Council's website www.manchester.gov.uk/elections or email esu@manchester.gov.uk
Look out for a 'Don't lose your voice' communications campaign across the city, encouraging would-be voters to register, coming soon.
