First glimpse of new-look Longsight Library & Learning Centre

16 March 2010

The much-anticipated opening of the Longsight Library & Learning Centre is planned for the end of April but for those who can’t wait that long, a sneak preview is planned for Mon 22 March 10am - 12pm.

For anyone eager to catch a glimpse of the library  and learning centre before the new equipment and furniture is moved in, it is opening its doors so people can see the changes that have been made.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure said: "Longsight Library is a real focal point for the local community and there is a lot of interest in the improvements that have been made and the increased services that will be on offer. The preview day will give people a chance to look round the building, familiarise themselves with the new layout and speak to library staff about the changes."

Councillor Sue Murphy executive member for employment and skills said: "The newly refurbished library will provide excellent facilities for everyone in the local community. The learning centre will be a great asset to those looking to update their skills and get back into work. This is the perfect opportunity to be one of the first to see the changes."

The building has been closed since February 2009 while major works have been undertaken to improve and expand the services for the area and to combine the library and learning centre facilities.

On the ground floor there will be a new children's zone, a homework club and Manchester's first headspace zone - a new laid-back environment for young people to read or get online.

The first floor will feature the new adult Learning Centre where you will find a wide range of learning opportunities to enable you to have fun gaining new skills , for work, for life, for your community and for your family. Drop in and try one of our free summer term taster sessions when the centre opens.   There is  also space to relax, meet other learners, read and study and a community area for local residents and groups to meet.
