Parrs Wood pupil's trip of a lifetime thanks to Prime Minister's Fellowship
1 June 2010
Rosanne Goh, a Sixth Form student at Parrs Wood High School in Didsbury has just been given the opportunity of a lifetime.
Rosanne is to spend six weeks in Brazil after being awarded one of just a 100 available places on the Prime Minister's Global Fellowship Programme.
The Programme offers 100 school and college leavers nationally the chance to experience first-hand the social, economic and environmental impact of globalisation in either Brazil, China, or India.
Competition for the places is fierce and 18 year old Rosanne had to undergo two gruelling interviews including a full day of activities and assessments.
Rosanne will go to Brazil for six weeks at the beginning of July. The tailor-made trip includes two weeks of language and culture immersion, two weeks staying in a local school and living with a local family, and two weeks with a global company.
Rosanne said: "I really can't believe I'm going. The interviews and assessments were hard work and pretty challenging, but I had fantastic support from my teachers at the school, and I'm really grateful to them for encouraging me to apply. I can't wait to go."
On their return to the UK, all Fellows join a network of globally minded young people who share their experiences and learning on local and national platforms, and are given the opportunity to share their story with a wide range of people, decision makers and community leaders.
Councillor Sheila Newman, Executive Member, Children's Services, Manchester City Council, said: "This is a fantastic achievement by Rosanne and I wish her well for her travels in Brazil. I hope I will get the opportunity after she returns to hear first hand about her experiences."
