Rugby star Sculthorpe leads Summer Fusion

17 August 2010

Former Great Britain rugby league captain Paul Sculthorpe will be passing on his skills to youngsters as part of an event aimed at cutting antisocial behaviour.

The rugby star, who also lifted the Challenge Cup as captain of St Helens, will be opening the Summer Fusion event at Ladybarn Park in Withington at 1pm on Saturday, August 21.

The Oldham-raised loose forward will then coach teams of youngsters during tag rugby games.

The event has been organised by Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police, and will feature various sports and music events showcasing the talents of south Manchester youngsters.

The event will feature performances from the Ladybarn Community Choir as well as music and dance from local groups, while there will also be activities including an army display team, football coaching, children's entertainment, percussion and puppetry dance workshops, a climbing wall and even sumo wrestling.

The event is funded by the Big Lottery Fund, with help from the Friends of Ladybarn Park, and although most activities will be free, any proceeds will go to the Help For Heroes charity.

Councillor Jim Battle, Manchester City Council's Deputy Leader, said: "Paul Sculthorpe will be a big draw for a lot of people and we're very grateful for him lending his support. But whether you're a rugby league fan or not, this will be a great event to bring the community together and we're inviting everyone from the area to come down."

Inspector Dave Nutsey from the Didsbury Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "We are looking forward to taking part in such a great event that will bring the community together and showcase the many talents from across the local area.

"Look out for our Have Your Say vehicle at the event and pop over and say hello.  My team are looking forward to meeting with residents and as well as speaking to them about any concerns that you may have, there will be plenty for kids to do too."
