Future Jobs Fund trainees help to build futures in the park

20 August 2010

A host of companies will join together to offer careers advice and information on employment at a special event in Alexandra Park, Whalley Range, on Thursday 26 August 2010.

The idea has come from six Future Jobs Fund trainees working at Manchester City Council who used their experiences in looking for work and training, in order to help others in the same situation.

All six, who have found employment since being part of the Future Jobs Fund, wanted to bring together colleges, organisations and construction firms to offer advice and sessions to all members of the community on employment and have managed the event as part of their training course.

And this is the first time that the council has used a park to host a career and employment advice session.

The organisations attending the event at Alexandra Park on 26 August include The Manchester College, the RAF, Laing O'Rourke, Gingerbread, Jobcentre Plus and SureStart.

Representatives from all companies will be on hand from 11 am until 3pm to address some of the barriers that people have when getting back into work and point them in the direction of training and employment opportunities.

Councillor Con Keegan, executive member for employment and skills at Manchester City Council said: "This is a great idea for the community  - and at an unique location for advice of this kind. The fact that these six trainees have planned the whole event from start to finish is very commendable and should offer a great informative day for anyone who needs valuable training and careers advice."

Trainee Thomas Weeks, from Fallowfield, who has now found work as a business development officer said: "After finishing university, I found it difficult to find a job due to lack of work experience and ended up on the future jobs fund working for Manchester City Council. I felt I was able to learn a lot and have gained valuable experience, with excellent support and I am pleased that I have secured my current position thanks to the training I received."
