Telling Fortunes at Gallery of Costume

8 September 2010

The Gallery of Costume is the venue for a brand new exhibition, Telling Fortunes by textile artist Alice Kettle, which opens on Wednesday 15 September 2010

Inspired by the gallery's permanent collections, which feature some stunning examples of detailed embroidery and exquisite gloves, which are of particular interest to the artist, Alice has created her own fascinating work for this original display.

Alice, who is currently a senior research fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University, uses stitching techniques to create figurative pieces, which often portray stories or thoughts. Telling Fortunes is a story 'of Manchester, of textile and of making..." and will be a delight for anyone interested in local history or fashion.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure said: "Telling Fortunes is an extremely welcome addition to the fabulous displays on view at the Costume Gallery and we're delighted that an artist of Alice Kettle's reputation has not only elected to exhibit at the gallery but has also been inspired by its collections."

Telling Fortunes will run from Wednesday 15 September until Friday 31 December 2010.
Entry to the gallery is free and is open from Wednesday to Saturday 1.30pm until 4.30pm.
