13 September 2010
Hopes are riding high for an adrenaline-packed day of urban sports, music, street dance and daredevil activities as the Blackley Extreme Sports event blasts back to north Manchester.
The event, which is free, is now in its third year and will be held on Saturday 25 September from 1pm-5pm at Blackley Skatepark in Plant Hill Park.
Breathtaking BMX and skateboard displays performed by some of Britain's best riders, including BMX world champion Sam Foakes will give momentum to the afternoon, along with football skills training from the Manchester City community team.
There will also live entertainment from the North West's finest emerging urban music talent and break-dance and street dance shows throughout the afternoon.
Thrill-seekers who want to be part of the action can take part in a number of events from the open mic and talent competitions to a range of extreme sports. Rodeo rides and climbing walls will all be open to visitors and for those who want to experience the thrill of being airborne, the trampoline bungee ride is a must.
Meanwhile, back down to earth, there will be workshops to customise skateboards and kit, and cult cartoonist 'Cookie' of Weird Fish surfwear fame will be putting his designs on t-shirts. Budding BMX-ers, skateboarders and in-line skaters will also have the chance to win prizes by entering the freestyle competition.
Blackley Extreme Sports is organised by Manchester City Council in partnership with the The Friends of Plant Hill Park.
Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure at Manchester City Council, said: "The Plant Hill Skate Park opened three years ago has become the heart of a thriving sport and social scene for youngsters. And, now the Blackley Extreme Sports event is back, not only as another outlet for enthusiasts, but also as a wider, family day with the inclusion of other sports like football and dodgeball and all the musical entertainment."
Blackley Extreme Sports takes place on Saturday 25 September 1pm- 5pm at Plant Hill Park, Plant Hill Road, Blackley, Manchester M9 0WQ. All participants must bring their own safety gear.
