Heaton Park grapes help fight cancer

6 October 2010

Autumn is upon us and Heaton Park is sharing its plentiful grape harvest with visitors.

People may recognise the sweet black grapes, which have been growing on the vine inside the coffee shop at the park's Hidden Gem Garden Centre.

The vine is over 25 years old, is approximately 6m long and has this year produced its largest crop ever.

Local people are now being given a chance to taste its success as staff at the Hidden Gem are giving the grapes away to members of the public for a minimum donation of £1.50 per bunch, all the proceeds of which will go to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure said: "This is locally grown produce at its very best and it's a wonderful idea to donate all monies raised to The Christie. This is a real community project and I'm sure  people will really enjoy buying fresh fruit from their local park while supporting a very worthy local charity."

The Hidden Gem Garden Centre at Heaton Park is open from 10am until 5.30pm, seven days a week.

It is set in beautiful gardens and offers a large selection of indoor and outdoor plants. It is also one of the largest hanging basket centres in the northwest.
