Manchester congratulates new Nobel Laureates
6 October 2010
Manchester has congratulated the three latest Nobel Laureates, all of whom have strong connections to the city.
Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:"The past two days have been remarkable for our city, with the creation of no fewer than three new Manchester Nobel Laureates.
"Professor Robert Edwards was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work on IVF yesterday, and Professor Andre Geim and Dr Konstantin Novoselov have today been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for their groundbreaking research, at Manchester University, on graphene-the world's thinnest material.
"I would like to congratulate all three for their incredible achievements. Manchester University alone can now boast 25 Nobel Laureates amongst its current and former staff and students, in itself a remarkable statistic.
"These three great scientists can now stand tall with the many Manchester Nobel Laureates who have gone before them. This recognition is richly deserved and I am incredibly proud that, once again, our great city has proven itself to be world-class."
Professor Edwards is from Manchester, and was educated at Manchester Central High School.
Professor Geim and Dr Novoselov are both Russian-born, but carried out their groundbreaking research into graphene at Manchester University, where they are both based. As well as being the world's thinnest substance, it is also incredibly strong and is considered to have a host of practical, diverse applications
