Picture memories of Manchester Day go online

7 October 2010

The summer sunshine may be a distant memory but Manchester people are being given the opportunity to relive that scorching day in June when the city celebrated Manchester Day.

All those who attended the festivities are being encouraged to submit their favourite photographs from the day to Manchester City Council, the best of which will feature on the Manchester Day website http://www.themanchesterdayparade.co.uk/

And there are a series of fantastic prizes for the person who captured the best shot.

A digital camera, provided by Manchester Day Parade sponsors Siemens, as well as the chance to view next year's event from the VIP area, taking pictures of Manchester Day alongside the official photographers, will be awarded to the winning entry.

They will also win a family ticket (admits four people) to the Spinningfields ice rink, which will be open from Thursday 11 November 2010 to Monday 3 January 2011, and also a ride for a family of four on the Wheel of Manchester in Exchange Square.

Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council's assistant executive member for culture and leisure said: "The public response to Manchester Day has been phenomenal and we wanted to create an outlet for people to share their memories of the first parade and why we're all so proud of the city. I've already seen some wonderful pictures taken by people on the day and felt strongly that these and others like them should have a public platform."

Manchester Day was held for the first time on Sunday 20 June 2010 and celebrated the past, present and future of Manchester with a cavalcade of music, dancing, larger than life characters and stunning floats

From the busy bee, an emblem of industrious Mancunians, to a giant and spectacular peacock, which is the national bird of India, the parade represented the fantastic cocktail and fusion of cultures that we enjoy in Manchester.

Emmeline Pankhurst's suffragettes stood shoulder to shoulder with Alan Turing and his marvellous scientific inventions as famous figures from Manchester's glorious past while young people from Catch 22 displayed their aspirations for the future with larger than life puppets and excellent performances.

If you wish to share your photographic memories from the Manchester Day Parade 2010 send them to manchester.day@manchester.gov.uk and you could be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes. Please send no more than three photographs at once and emails should be no bigger than 10 megabytes.

All entries should be submitted by Friday 29 October 2010 and the winner will be announced the week beginning Monday 1 November 2010.
