Enjoy bonfire night safely with organised events

25 October 2010

There are plenty of free, organised bonfires and firework displays taking place across Manchester this year so that people can enjoy themselves safely and without breaking the bank.

There are nine different events being held at the city's parks so there is plenty of choice wherever you live.

The fun gets underway on Friday 29 October 2010 at Debdale Park in Gorton, kicking off a full week of festivities which ends on 5 November itself with the city's largest bonfire night celebrations at Wythenshawe Park, Platt Fields Park and Heaton Park.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure said: "We want people to enjoy bonfire night in a safe environment and the best way to do that is at an organised display. Our park staff have a great deal of experience in putting on these events, which never fail to dazzle and wow audiences and we're expecting to see more people than ever at one of our parks over the bonfire period."

Manchester's residents are being encouraged to attend organised bonfires and firework displays rather than host their own and are advised that it can be dangerous for people to build and light their own bonfires.

For the first time this year, the Manchester City Council Act will enable officers to seize any fireworks being sold illegally on the street, while local people are also reminded it is illegal and dangerous to carry fireworks in public, throw them or set them off in the street or let them off anywhere late at night.

If you have any concerns about the illegal sale of fireworks or the building of bonfires in dangerous places you can contact Environment on Call on 0161 954 9000.
