TV chef helps food budget go further
30 November 2010
A TV chef will give 100 Manchester residents a free course in making ingredients go further with a special event at Gorton Monastery.
Dave Mooney, Granada's resident chef, will use the stunning building as a backdrop to his workshop in making tasty meals out of leftover ingredients, on Tuesday 7 December.
Dave, who has worked with Raymond Blanc and Marco Pierre White, as well as appearing with TV's Hairy Bikers, is holding the event as part of the Love Food Hate Waste campaign, organised by the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority with Manchester City Council.
Anyone who attends one of the four sessions being held throughout the day will receive advice about how to save up to £50 per month, as well as a food rescue pack featuring exciting recipes.
All equipment and ingredients will be provided and everyone who attends will be able to eat the dish they've cooked.
Dave Mooney said: "I am delighted to be leading the cookery lessons and Love Food Hate Waste is such a great concept which everyone can get involved in.
"I am sure the events will be good fun and a great way for people to learn to love their leftovers."
Councillor Nigel Murphy, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "Events like this are an excellent opportunity to let people realise how easy it is to save money by making their food go further, as well as helping stop waste food going to landfill sites where it produces methane which contributes to climate change."
The two-hour sessions will run from 9.30am, 12.30pm, 3.30pm and 6.30pm. Other sessions are being held across Greater Manchester from 6-17 December.
Anyone who wants to register for a free place should contact joanne.nuttall@gmwda.gov.uk or call 07787 104 175 or 0161 770 1745.
