Older motorists gear up for free refresher course
2 December 2010
Twenty four older motorists have signed up for a drivers refresher course following an event organised by Manchester City Council and the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
The event was held this week at the Minehead Resource Centre in Withington and was designed to boost road safety and awareness for Manchester's older motorists.
There was a short presentation on driving tips and a chance to put any questions to a representative from the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
Nationally, there are over 9 million drivers over the age of 60, and in the city of Manchester alone there are 30,000 older motorists.
The idea of the event was to offer a confidence boost to older drivers in a supportive and friendly environment.
Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Environment, Councillor Nigel Murphy said: "The aim of this event was to give help and advice to drivers who may have become nervous so they can get back in their cars and drive safely and with confidence. It was very well attended and we're delighted so many people have signed up for the refresher course."
The drivers refresher course is run by the Institute of Advanced Motorists and involves a driver going out in his or her own car along with an instructors who will provide a constructive analysis of their driving.
