Future champions and sports clubs in Manchester get grants from MCC

17 December 2010

Sports clubs, athletes and coaches across Manchester will be receiving more than £15,000 in cash grants from Manchester City Council in partnership with Manchester Sport and Leisure Trust.

Cash awards are given to sports clubs which demonstrate a commitment to grow participation in sport, to individual athletes who have successfully reached certain performance standards and to sports coaches who are developing their coaching ability and raising standards in sport.

The money is given from two sources - the Neighbourhood Sports Fund and Champions Charter grant schemes, which are funded and administered by Manchester City Council's sports development team and Manchester Sport and Leisure Trust.

The two funds demonstrate Manchester's continued commitment to build on the legacy of the 2002 Commonwealth Games and drive an increase in sporting opportunities ahead of and beyond the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The award ceremony is taking place on Friday 17 December 2010 at the Manchester Town Hall in the Lord Mayor's Suite. Successful applicants will be handed the cheques by Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure.

He said: "Manchester is a world leading city for sport and remains committed to investing in sports clubs and providing coaches and individual athletes the opportunity to reach their full potential in sport.  The Neighbourhood Sports Fund and Champions Charter Fund are two schemes which help Manchester achieve its ambition of creating a world leading community sports system and provide much needed support to local residents and Manchester's sports clubs."

Tommy Dolan from Levenshulme Amateur Boxing Club who will receive a grant from the Neighbourhood Sports fund said: "I am extremely pleased with the assistance that I have received from Manchester City Council and Manchester Sport and Leisure Trust in setting up an Amateur Boxing Club in Levenshulme and I am looking forward to developing new boxing opportunities for the local community to get involved in."

The latest round of applications has seen £15,912.99 awarded through the Neighbourhood Sports Fund and £1660.00 through the Champions Charter. Two funding rounds take place throughout the year. For information on Manchester Sport and Leisure Trust visit: http://www.manchestersportandleisure.org/
