'Art Republic' declared at Gorton Market
25 January 2011
For the next two months, until 31 March, Gorton Market host Gortonia: Republic of Art,a new and exciting scheme that aims to bring together the people of Gorton through a series of free art workshops.
Incorporating free classes in everything from painting to drawing and photography, the initiative is run by Gorton People Stronger Together, a brand new community group established for the benefit of the people who live, work and go to school in Gorton.
Working with community artist, Phil Towers, the free tutorials offer an excellent opportunity for adults and children alike to explore their more creative side. The completed masterpieces will even be exhibited and sold in a community gallery set up in Gorton Market's indoor hall.
The free workshops are open for 11-16 year olds Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3.30pm until 5pm and Saturdays 12pm - 3.pm. The adult classes are open Tuesday afternoons from 12pm until 3pm and Saturdays 10am-12pm.
The gallery will be open every Saturday from 10am - 4pm for browsing and buying.
The workshops are not the only reason to visit Gorton Market. The market also offers a huge range of goods and services, from authentic Polish goods, pedicures and electrical equipment, to fashion and sports goods. Stall holders take great pride in providing a welcoming atmosphere and friendly personal service. The market is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm.
Councillor Paul Andrews, Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, said, "This is an excellent opportunity for Manchester residents to get creative and express themselves. Gorton Market provides a hub for a vibrant community, the Gortonia project is one more reason to visit the Market."
Martin O'Malley, communities outreach officer for Gorton People Stronger Together, said, "This is a great chance to come down to Gorton Market and participate in our free workshops. Everyone involved has the chance to display their work along side established artists in our very own art gallery. This is an opportunity for the people of Gorton to unlock their creative potential and nurture artistic talents they may not know they have. "
