Recyclers’ golden opportunity to help schools

27 January 2011

Household recycling will be turned into bonuses for youngsters as residents receive ‘golden tickets’ to help local schools.

Manchester City Council is introducing the scheme, encouraging residents in more than 2,300 properties in Sharston to recycle even more.

Residents will find a golden ticket tied around the handles of their blue and brown bins every time they use them to recycle materials such as glass, card and plastic bottles.

These can then be collected and used by Peel Hall and St Elizabeth's primary schools to provide everything from new books and computers to improvements to the school grounds.

Meanwhile, pupils will also benefit by learning all about recycling and the environment, as the team will be visiting the school and holding assemblies and classes, with fun activities to get them - and hopefully their parents - involved.

Residents with children at either school can give the tickets to their youngsters, who can bring them in directly, or they can be dropped off at collection points such as Wythenshawe Forum and Willow Park Neighbourhood Office.

The opportunity is being given to residents after a similar scheme successfully improved recycling rates in Withington.

Councillor Nigel Murphy, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "We're offering Sharston residents a golden opportunity to help local school, and all they've got to do is recycle their household waste.

"This is a great chance for residents to begin recycling even more, and it will be their children or their neighbours' children who will benefit. This scheme has been highly successful in other parts of the city, and I'm confident that residents in Sharston will all do their bit to help their schools."
