100 Voices as Manchester celebrates the centenary of International Women's Day

1 February 2011

A hundred women from across Manchester will be the stars of this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations.

2011 will mark 100 years of International Women's Day and as part of the celebrations, Manchester City Council is inviting women of all ages to take part in special video montage, with the theme '100 years, 100 voices'.

Manchester women are being offered the chance to give their views about what they feel has changed for women in the past 100 years - and what changes they would like to see in the next 100 years.

A YouTube channel has been set up for people to upload their own two - minute videos on, to show the strength, character and humour of women across the city.

The videos will be screened at the Town Hall as part of the International Women's Day celebration on 6 March 2011 and on screens across the city.

Councillor Suzanne Richards, lead member for women at Manchester City Council said: "We are encouraging women from all walks of life, and any age to express their opinions on the past, present and future for women - and what they would like to see change for them over the next century."

"It's clear that women still face many challenges both in work and everyday life. We want to give voice to the hopes, thoughts and feelings of Manchester women. I am sure the 100 Years 100 Voices campaign will give us some amazing insights into women's lives and a lasting record of the views of women in 2011."

Among the first to record their pieces will be Manchester Women's Award winners, outstanding young women Sasha Clarke, aged 19, and the Elizabeth Gaskell Award winner 92-year-old Elizabeth Tebbs.

Women can upload their two-minute video on www.youtube.com/2011iwd  or attend a drop-in session to be filmed on Thursday 3 February at the Pankhurst Centre, 60-62 Nelson Street M13 9WP 12-2.00pm or on Monday 14 February in Committee Room 2, Manchester Town Hall, Albert Square, Manchester 4.00-5.00pm.
