World record attempt for Manchester primary school

8 February 2011

More than 500 schoolchildren, teachers and parents are preparing for a rousing rendition of singing and sign language as part of an international bid to break into the Guinness World Records.

At 2.45pm on Wednesday 9th February Alma Park Primary School in Manchester will join people from across the globe for Sign2Sing - a mass performance of I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing, complete with sign language.

The record-breaking attempt has been organised to raise funds and promote awareness for national healthcare charity SignHealth, which seeks to support deaf people.

Currently the world record for people signing and using sign language at the same time stands at 13,418 but pupils at Alma Park will be doing their bit to ensure participants can smash that target.

Deputy headteacher Karen Houghton said: "Sign2Sing fits in with the whole ethos of our inclusive school.

"It's fantastic to have so many people connected with the school involved."

Everybody at Alma Park Primary School is taught sign language in order to allow all pupils to communicate with their deaf peers.

Sheila Newman, Executive Member for Children's Services, has praised the school for taking part in the sign and sing-a-long.

She said: "This is a fantastic initiative which will raise funds for a most worthy cause, while also demonstrating the wonderful work of Alma Park in teaching its children sign language to promote inclusiveness."
