Community centre boosts job prospects in Wythenshawe
14 March 2011
A community centre in the heart of Baguley has been brought back to use so that it can offer training to reduce unemployment in Wythenshawe.
The purpose-built centre, which is in the Bideford Estate is now offering an initial 12-week programme of events on Tuesdays and Thursdays, including computer lessons, budgeting skills and family learning programmes, to give residents a taste of the facilities on offer.
The Bideford Estate is one of the most deprived areas of the country. Almost 70 per cent of residents from the estate and surrounding area receive housing benefit and 40 per cent of residents consider themselves to have a disability, long-term illness or mental health condition.
A survey in November of residents living in the Bideford Estate, showed a need for a centre which could be a both a training provision and a social outlet.
After the 12-week opening programme at the Bideford Centre, there will be additional learning, mentor and employment support as well as a range of hobbies on offer.
Councillor Glynn Evans, Executive Member for Adult Services at Manchester City Council, said: "We want the Bideford Centre to become a hub which will be used by residents to gain skills to improve job prospects. Prevention is always better than cure - if people feel empowered and skilled they are far less likely to have mental health issues and problems with getting a job and supporting their families."
Initial funding for work-related training was committed to the project by Manchester City Council last year. Parkway Green Housing Trust will work with funding providers to sustain the centre and develop training needs.
Nigel Wilson, Chief Executive of Parkway Green Housing Trust, said: "We hope local people make the most of the facilities and courses that are on offer and now available. There is a vibrant and exciting atmosphere and it's a great opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people, so please call in and find out what the centre can offer you."
