Eurovision hopeful, Simon Webbe says Moss Side is his muse

24 March 2011

Eurovision hopeful Simon Webbe, from boy band Blue, will be representing the country – and Moss Side at the Eurovision Song Contest in May.

Singing 'I can' the reunited bandmates will be hoping to win over the judges in Germany this year, with their soulful performance.

But, for Simon, who went on to have a successful solo singing, songwriting and acting career, it's chance to reflect on his roots and make Moss Side proud of his work.

"A lot of my music reflects my background and upbringing in Moss Side. I know first-hand that it's a tightknit neighbourhood, where the residents are proud of the community and heritage."

The 32-year-old, who was born in Moss Side and still has family there, has given his backing to Manchester City Council's regeneration plans for the area. In particular, Simon has been impressed by the youngsters who are leading the way in creating a new image for Moss Side.

"I know that sometimes it's too easy for young people to go down the wrong road in life," he says. " I have nothing but respect for the teenagers in Moss Side who have demonstrated what a powerful effect their voices can have in community projects for the greater good. It just shows that young people can and should stand up for the good things in life."

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure at Manchester City Council, said, "It's fantastic to have such a passionate advocate for Moss Side because it emphasises the area's cultural, social and business potential. The song title is very apt - so many of Moss Side's youngsters have an 'I can' attitude which is a great credit to them. We wish Simon and the rest of Blue great success at the Eurovision Song Contest in May."
