Manchester residents get ‘Right to Control’
5 April 2011
Manchester City Council is part of a new trailblazing scheme to help disabled adults have more choice and control over their own lives.
'Right to Control' allows disabled people to shape the support they receive, with a more personalised service joining up housing, support into work and community care.
From April 2011, Manchester will be one of just seven areas in the country to trial the new approach in partnership with four other councils in Greater Manchester - Bury, Oldham, Stockport and Trafford.
Organisations including Job Centre Plus, Independent Living Fund, and Breakthrough UK will also be part of the partnership to help people choose services and decide how to spend their money.
'Right to Control' is set to give disabled people a streamlined customer journey bringing together different types of financial support. They will then be able to combine their monies to create a personal package based around their requirements.
People can choose to receive their usual support, or take it from another provider, or have money paid directly to them so they can buy their own support - or a mixture of these.
Liz Bruce Manchester City Council's strategic director, adults said: "This is an innovative and ambitious scheme and it is great that Manchester is pioneering this as part of the partnership. It will ensure that disabled people have a clear, straightforward way of managing their support and their lives and improve their independence.
