Stunning success for Manchester City victory celebrations

24 May 2011

Tens of thousands of people lined the streets of Manchester to celebrate Manchester City Football Club's victory in the FA Cup.

Around 10,000 people filled Albert Square to watch the team, led by manager Roberto Mancini, get on an open top bus with the iconic trophy.

The bus then snaked its way through the city centre, with thousands lining the route to catch a glimpse of the trophy and the triumphant team. It then headed to the City of Manchester Stadium for a celebratory event that ended in fireworks.

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: "This has been a momentous day for City fans and players alike. I'd like to thank the supporters, who turned up in their droves to acclaim the team, for their great support and trademark good humour.

"Once again we have demonstrated that Manchester is a place which knows how to celebrate. Whatever your allegiance, the success of either of the city's clubs is good for the city as a whole, and hopefully these sort of scenes will be repeated many times in the years ahead."

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) also praised the fans for making the event a night to remember.

GMP Assistant Chief Constable Ian Hopkins, said: "This evening has been an outstanding success and Manchester City can be proud of their fans behaviour.  Around 50,000 people lined the streets and behaved impeccably, providing a carnival-like atmosphere in the city centre.

"We have worked very closely with both Manchester City Council and Manchester City Football Club to ensure the event caused minimum disruption as possible and I believe it has been thoroughly enjoyed by all supporters."
