Bank holiday roads closed for United parade
27 May 2011
People travelling in and out of the city centre this Bank Holiday Monday are being reminded there will be a Manchester United FC victory parade.
Up to 150,000 fans are expected to line the streets on Monday 30 May tocelebrate the club's record 19th League win, and potentially the European Cup if they beat Barcelona at Wembley on Saturday.
An open-top bus will take the squad from Manchester Cathedral at 10am, before travelling down Deansgate and out of the city centre along Chester Road , past the Old Trafford stadium before finally arriving at Stretford Mall at around 12.45pm.
People travelling in and out of the city centre on Monday morning are being advised to expect some disruption to roads and public transport and to consider this when planning their journeys.
Deansgate from Hunt's Bank to Liverpool Road , including Victoria Street , will be closed from 7am, while Great Ducie Street from Trinity Way and Hunt's Bank, Sir Matt Busby Way , and Warwick Road to Talbot Road will be closed from 9am.
Bridgewater Viaduct to Chester Road , Bridgewater Way, Wharfside Way and Talbot Road to Stretford Mall will be closed as necessary from 10.30am depending on the amount of people along the route.
Traffic diversion signs will be put up on the day while barriers will be removed and roads reopened as soon as crowds have dispersed.
Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure, said: " Manchester is now undoubtedly the capital of football, and Sir Alex Ferguson and the team have done Manchester proud winning a record 19th League Title. This parade will be a fantastic opportunity for the red half of Manchester to see their footballing heroes.
"While we're working to keep disruption to a minimum, people travelling in and out of the city centre should be aware of the parade and bear it in mind while planning their journeys."
