Manchester turns red for United celebration

31 May 2011

Tens of thousands of Manchester United fans lined the streets of the city centre to watch the team celebrate their record-breaking 19th Barclays Premier League win.

The team were on an open-top bus, along with the trophy, which was designated number 19.

It was cheered the length of Deansgate, before going into Trafford to the Theatre of Dreams, before ending at Stretford Mall after passing Trafford Town Hall.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Culture and Leisure said: "There may have been a touch of rain, but the sun was shining in our hearts.

"It was fantastic to see Manchester turn red for the parade. Manchester United has done our city proud by winning the Premier League a record-breaking 19th time.

"I'd like to thank the tens of thousands of people who lined the streets to see their team for their impeccable behaviour and true passion. We were able to show the world that we know how to celebrate - and deserve our title as the world capital of football. "It's been an amazing couple of weeks for football fans in Manchester, no matter what their allegiance. It's also great for the city. Both parades have proved to be the perfect kick-off for a brilliant summer, that will include Manchester Day, Manchester International Festival and Manchester Pride."

Assistant Chief Constable Ian Hopkins, from Greater Manchester Police, added: "It is really pleasing how today has gone - everybody has behaved incredibly well.

"While the numbers were fewer than expected, it is still testament to the fans that they turned out in great numbers to support their team.

"This is the second time we have done this in a week - along with hosting the League One play-offs - and it shows how Greater Manchester can party in a sensible and enjoyable way."

The parade was organised by Manchester City Council and Trafford Council in partnership with MUFC, supported by GMP.
