Outstanding pupils receive top educational awards

Over 40 pupils from Manchester schools have scooped top educational awards in recognition of their remarkable achievements in school and in their local communities.

The pupils were invited to Manchester Town Hall to receive their awards at the Council's eleventh annual Educational Achievement Awards ceremony from the Lord Mayor of Manchester , Councillor Harry Lyons.

The awards recognise those pupils, nominated by their schools, who have demonstrated excellence in some aspect of their school life during the last academic year.

Pupils who received awards included Imogen Brown and Thomas Smith, both aged 13 years from Parrs Wood High School , Didsbury.  Imogen was nominated for an award for setting herself high standards and quietly excelling in all aspects of school life, and Thomas is an outstandingly academic student who consistently achieves high levels in all areas of study.

Pupils who received awards included high flyer Alexandra Nunn aged 17 from Newall Green High School.  Alexandra was nominated for her award by her school after raising money for Wythenshawe Special Care Baby Unit, by taking part in a hair raising skydive, and for her work in school helping other students who have learning difficulties.

Pupils who received awards included 13 years old Olivia Gill and 14 years old Bernard Collins from Our Lady's RC High School.

Olivia is described by her school as a model pupil and an enthusiastic member of the school council who always puts more than enough effort into everything she does. Bernard is another very motivated pupil who the school says gives 110 per cent at all times, and who is excelling and exceeding all of his targets.

Fellow Newall Green High School student, Frankie Sheldon aged 13 also received an award.  Not only is he due to take his GCSEs a year early, this remarkable young man has also visited the Houses of Parliament to deliver a speech about education and the local community, as well as delivering speeches to several mayors across the Greater Manchester area, and to then minister Ed Balls at the official opening of the school.

Award winners from St Paul's RC High School, Wythenshawe, included Sanders Sunny and Patrick Dina both aged 16 years.  Head Boy Sanders Sunny is an amazing ambassador for his school and was chosen to represent it at Commonwealth Day celebrations held at Westminster and addressed by Her Majesty the Queen.  Deputy Head Boy Patrick Dina has been a school councillor since he first joined the school in Year 7 and regularly contributes ideas and suggestions to help improve school life in this role.

Other high flying students include Cynthia Anyaeriuba and Jolene Jackson both aged 15 years from Levenshulme High School for Girls; and from Loreto High School 13 years old Jay Carroll who is respected by his peers and by school staff for his mature behaviour, and talented musician Sinead Power aged 12 years who is passionate about music and gave an outstanding performance recently at the school's spring music concert.

Pupils who received awards include keen sportsmen and high achieving twelve year old twins, Jarred and Reece Milner from The East Manchester Academy, who both work hard and play hard.

Jarred is a real ambassador for the Academy, is very reliable, responsible and hardworking and always pushes himself to achieve the very highest of standards. Reece is also regarded as a real asset to the school and has achieves highly in all subjects.

Other pupils who received awards include Creative and Media Academy students Veeraphan Rujipong, Aaron Yeatman, and Emma Kenyon - all aged 16 years.

Councillor Afzal Khan, Executive Member, Children's Services, Manchester City Council said:  "Each of the students who received an award is a credit to their school and to their community.  They deserve the utmost respect for their achievements and their families should be very proud of them. This is just the beginning, the seeds of success have been sown and I am sure they will all go far."
