Civil War re-enactment knot to be missed

19 July 2011

Visitors to Debdale Park will be transported back to the 17th century on Sunday 24 July when the Sealed Knot set up camp at Gorton Festival.

The English Civil War re-enactment society, the Sealed Knot, will set up a living history camp from 11.30am-4.30pm. The camp will portray an English Civil War army and camp followers, with period tents and artefacts.

From 1.30-3.30pm the Sealed Knot will bring the noise and spectacle of the civil war to life as Roundheads and Cavalier clash in mock battles and drills. The Sealed Knot's units will demonstrate period military drill movements and weapons, with the use of black powder by the musketeers and cannons.

The historical demonstration is part of the annual Gorton Festival, which takes place from 12-4pm and will also include bowling competitions, a dog-show, music, sports, BMX displays and stalls run by local community groups.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, executive member for culture and leisure, said "The Sealed Knot is certain to put on a magnificent display that will make the Gorton Festival an unmissable event. Yet again, Gorton Festival is set to be colourful, lively, and a fantastic family day out."
