Hulme Festival scaled back

29 July 2011

Plans for the Hulme Festival have been scaled back.

It had been proposed that a series of events would be held in Hulme Park throughout the day on Saturday 30 July 2011.

However issues over the licensing of the event arose which the Council and organisers were unable to resolve beforehand, so this part of the festival - which included the main stage - will not now go ahead.

A Manchester City Council spokesperson said: "The plans for the Hulme Festival were exciting and ambitious, however before we can support any event we have to be confident that it will be safe. The necessary steps to ensure this were not completed and there just wasn't time to resolve the issues that arose.

"After discussions with the organisers and other agencies, including the police, we regretfully had to withdraw our support and funding for the event in Hulme Park.

"We're pleased to say that some events will still take place at venues including the Zion Arts Centre and Hulme Garden Centre, but the festival has been scaled back significantly.

"We appreciate this will disappoint local people who were looking forward to the festival. Indeed, we share that disappointment. But Hulme residents can be assured that we are committed to facilitating safe and enjoyable family events in the area and hope that there will be a Hulme Festival in the future."
