Moss Side turns yards into miles of greenery
12 August 2011
Moss Side residents are set to prove that anyone can have a green oasis at their back door.
On Sunday (14 August), a selection of creative residents will be taking part in an event that has given birth to a new hybrid - the yarden - or back yards that have been transformed into gardens.
The event, which runs from 2 -5pm, is called Open Yardens has been organised by The Avenues Residents Association (TARA), environmental group Transition Moss Side, and is supported by Manchester City Council. The afternoon will be a showcase, where keen gardeners can demonstrate to like-minded individuals how to give concrete and flagstones a leafy makeover and enhance their neighbourhood.
The event spans Thornton Avenue, Lloyd St South, Parkside Road, Alexandra Avenue, Yew Tree Avenue and Laurel Avenue. It will also feature a live gardening demonstration in the newly gated alley between Yew Tree Avenue and Laurel Avenue.
Councillor Paul Andrews, Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services at Manchester City Council, said: "This is a great opportunity to take pride in where you live, perhaps start a new hobby and add value to your own community. Small, creative steps like this can have a giant impact on neighbourhoods, which has been well demonstrated by Moss Side's talented gardeners."
Visitors can register for the event and pick up a map on the corner of Lloyd Street South and Thornton Road. For more information about the event, contact Becca on 07734 414 449 or email:
