Fire at Sandfold Lane HWRC, Manchester

Sandfold Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in Levenshulme, Manchester is currently closed to the public due to a vehicle fire on site.

Three engines from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service are currently in attendance to manage the incident.

A spokesperson from Viridor, said: "At around 12.10pm this afternoon [19 September 2011], a fire broke out whilst a Viridor vehicle was on the Sandfold Lane site to collect small electrical equipment for recycling. The fire has been contained within the vehicle and the site has been evacuated for safety reasons."

Viridor confirmed that the material to be collected was small WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) which would typically include household vacuum cleaners, kettles, toasters and games consoles.

Viridor operates the site on behalf of the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) as part of its 25 year waste and recycling contract. Viridor takes the safety of its staff, facilities and neighbours very seriously indeed and in addition to launching its own internal investigation, will work with authorities as appropriate to determine the cause of the incident.

Residents will be redirected to the nearest alternative Household Waste Recycling Centres at Reliance Street , Newton Heath or Bredbury Parkway , Stockport . Updates will be made available on http://www.recycleforgreatermanchester.com/
