Town Hall says ‘thank you’ to post-riot heroes
27 October 2011
Manchester residents and businesses who helped the city recover after August’s disturbances are being thanked this weekend.
The special event, which will also encourage people to volunteer, is called Thank You Manchester - A Celebration of Volunteering, and will be held at Manchester Town Hall on Saturday 29 October from 11am-3pm.
Volunteering groups will also be using the event to showcase some of the opportunities that they offer - from supporting their local community through to work on city-wide projects.
Anyone attending the event will be able to find out more about how to volunteer in their local area, and will be given the opportunity to sign up to a range of groups, including the city council's Community Guardians or the Key Individual Network (KINS) scheme, run in partnership with Greater Manchester Police.
At the same time, GMP will also be staging a public event, just outside on Albert Square, which will provide information about how people can help their communities by volunteering for the police.
Manchester City Council's deputy leader, Cllr Jim Battle, said: "The recent riots featured some of the worst criminal scenes of violence and disorder witnessed in Manchester, but we also saw hundreds of ordinary people give their own time to demonstrate how proud they are of their city. We want to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to the volunteers, businesses, emergency services and council staff who helped.
"The city council and the police have got a wide range of volunteering schemes to help local people make their communities into better places, and Saturday's events are aimed at letting people know about the help that is out there for them."
