Thug banned from streets after attacking ex-partner
23 November 2011
A thug who was jailed after assaulting his former partner has been banned from entering streets in Hulme.
Jason Madegwa, aged 40, of Hulme Street, has been banned from a series of streets off Princess Parkway, as well as from being drunk or drinking in any public place other than a pub, bar or restaurant.
Manchester City Council obtained an anti social behaviour order against Madegwa during a hearing on Monday 14 November, when he was sentenced to a community and restraining order for harassment and common assault.
He was remanded in custody after being arrested for an attack on his former partner in September, during which he punched, grabbed and dragged the woman. He pleaded guilty to the offences during an earlier hearing on 8 November.
The court heard he had also harassed her almost every day for months by banging, shouting and kicking her door.
Earlier, Madegwa had been convicted of using threatening language and assaulting a female police officer during a separate hearing.
He had been spotted on Claremont Street, Hulme with a woman whose face was covered in blood during an incident in June. When a female police officer questioned him, he chased her down the street shouting abuse at her.
When another officer tried to arrest Madegwa, he attempted to bite her.
He was remanded in custody after being arrested and pleaded guilty to the offences during a hearing in July, receiving a conditional discharge.
Madegwa was also convicted of common assault and damage to property after breaking his next door neighbour's window and then attacking the neighbour when he was approached about this during an incident in February.
He was arrested for this offence and later pleaded guilty to the offences, receiving a supervision order and a restraining order.
Madegwa had also threatened to damage a female Manchester City Council's officer's car after she parked it in front of his house while carrying out her duties in August.
Hulme residents regularly reported that he would drink alcohol on the street with others and would be aggressive and abusive towards members of the public.
Madegwa was spotted drinking with a group of eight other men in June, breaching an alcohol exclusion zone that is in place in parts of Hulme, and was abusive towards a police officer who arrived to confiscate cans of alcohol, saying he wasn't afraid to fight the police.
The three-year ASBO bans Madegwa from approaching, threatening or communicating with his former partner, or from using any abusive or offensive language or behaviour.
Madegwa could be sent back to prison if he breaks any conditions of the ASBO.
Councillor Paul Andrews, Manchester City Council's executive member for neighbourhood services, said: "Madegwa's behaviour has been completely unacceptable and he has been a menace to people he has come into contact with, including his former partner, his neighbours as well as police and City Council officers who have been carrying out their duties.
"Hulme residents should be reassured that we have taken this action and I would like to urge anyone who sees him breaking the ASBO to contact the police immediately."
Chief Inspector Neil Bholé for the Metropolitan Division said: "We want this to send a clear message that police are committed to tackling domestic abuse. This ASBO is a great tool for us in preventing any future distress, be it mental or physical.
"If he breaches this he faces a five-year prison sentence and this should act as a message to other people that domestic abuse will not be tolerated and police are working hard to wipe it out.
"Victims of domestic abuse are reminded that they shouldn't suffer in silence. You can report incidents to Greater Manchester Police on 0161 872 5050 or 999 where there is an immediate threat to life or crime in progress.
