The Manchester Primary School Squash competition saw three schools from across Manchester compete to be crowned Manchester Champions 2011-2012 at the National Squash Centre on Thursday 10 May.

The tournament was for year 5 and 6 pupils with six teams entering including St Brigids (Bradford), St Catherine's (Didsbury), and St Cuthbert's (Withington). The final was played on the prestigious glass show-court.

There was some incredible talent on display in the first few rounds, with some very competitive rallies and players demonstrating a variety of shots. The six teams, made up of both boys and girls, played a number of games on route to their final positions.

The final saw St Cuthbert's and St Catherine's compete for the top spot, with both teams showing a tremendous amount of ability, effort and skill. St Cuthbert's just managed to edge out St Catherine's in what was a hard fought final and came out overall winners - but praise must also go to their opponents, who made them work very hard in every game.

Councillor Rosa Battle, executive member for culture and leisure, said, "Manchester boasts world-class sporting facilities and events like the School Squash Competition go to show the facilities can be used by everyone and are not just for elite events.

"I'd like to congratulate not only St Cuthbert's on their victory but all the other participants. It's great to see primary school children using the National Squash Centre and I hope it helps inspires a life long love of sport."

Chris Lengthorn the Manchester's Head Squash Coach said, 'It was great to see all these players and schools participating in the event and really shows that participation in squash is once again on the increase."
