Only days to go - Manchester local elections voter deadline approaches

There are just days remaining until the deadline for Manchester residents to make sure they are registered to vote in next month’s local elections.

People will not be able to vote in these elections unless they have registered to vote by the end of Monday 18 April. 

Voters will go to the polls on Thursday 5 May to elect 32 councillors – one in each of the city’s wards, representing one third of the full council.

Anyone who is on the electoral register can also choose to register to vote by post. Applications for a postal vote in the forthcoming local elections must be received by 5pm on Tuesday 19 April. 

With the crucial referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union being held on Thursday 23 June, would-be voters are being urged to make sure they are registered so they can have their democratic say.

Registration is a quick and easy process. If you are not registered you can visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote to download a registration form. You will just need your date of birth and national insurance number. If you need to update your details (for example if you have moved house, or changed surname through marriage) or simply check whether you are on the register email esu@manchester.gov.uk or call (0161) 2341212. 

Sir Howard Bernstein, Electoral Registration Officer for Manchester, said: “This election gives people the chance to elect the politicians who will represent them locally. 

“The referendum on whether the UK should remain in or leave the European Union is also just around the corner. It’s essential that nobody loses out on their right to vote because they are not registered.”
