Parents - don't miss secondary school admission deadline - 31 October

Parents of pupils who will be starting secondary school in September next year are being urged not to miss the deadline for applying for their child's school place.

All applications must be made before before the strict deadline of 5pm on Tuesday 31 October.

All parents must apply for a place for their child - a place can't be allocated for a child if an application isn't made.

The easiest way to apply is online and parents should have already received a letter with a unique identifying number for their child to speed up the online process.

Parents who haven’t received this can still apply online – it will just take a few minutes longer.

Parents should list at least three school preferences on their application, and rank their preferred schools to show which would be their first, second, third preference and so on if places were available at those schools.

Manchester operates an equal preference system to allocate school places. This means each school listed on an application will be considered at the same time.

If the system shows a place could be offered at more than one preferred school, the child will be offered a place at the school ranked highest on the application form.

Councillor Luthfur Rahman, Manchester City Council’s Lead Member for schools, said: "Choosing a high school is a big commitment and a real investment in a child's future, so parents should make sure they find out as much as they can before they apply.  Even at this late stage they can do this by going on-line and looking at a school's website.

"Once parents have done this it's vital that they don't miss the admission deadline of 5 pm on 31 October.

"Late applications are not dealt with until after all on-time applications, and parents stand far less chance of getting one of their preferred schools."
