Manchester City Council

Council Tax How we work out your Council Tax when you move from one Manchester address to another

Once you have told us about the move, we will close your old account and send you a bill for any amount you still owe.

If you have overpaid we can transfer the credit to the account for your new address or refund it to you.

Your new bill will tell you what your new instalments will be.

How we work out your Council Tax
If you move from one Manchester address to another, you will be charged for your old address up to the day before you move and for your new address from the day you move in.

Example
You moved to your new address on 16 May 2013. Your old address is a band A property. Your new address is a band B property.

Your charge is:

  • 45 days at band A (1 April 2013 to 15 May 2013).
  • 320 days at band B (for 16 May 2013 to 31 March 2014).

To work out the charge using this example:

The charge for your old address is:
£884.66 (band A annual charge) ÷ 365 days for this year x 45 days at the property = £109.07

The charge for your new address is:
£1032.11 (band B annual charge) ÷ 365 days for this year x 320 days at the property = £904.86

Add the charge for your old address to the charge for your new address to get the total charge for the year: £109.07 + £904.86 = £1013.93
