Homes & property Energy efficiency: advice and checks

Energy Team

The government says that all local councils should increase the energy efficiency of housing in their area by 30 percent over 1995 levels.

The aim is to cut pollution, combat global warming and reduce fuel poverty - where people either put up with a cold, uncomfortable home, or heat their homes and get into debt.

The Manchester City Council Energy Team collects detailed information about every home in Manchester. The computerised information comes from a variety of sources - sometimes from data we already hold, sometimes from staff collecting fresh details.

Government recommendations

The computerised system shows how efficient each home is, and lists any improvements that have been done to make it cheaper to run. It compares the efficiency of each home with recommendations set by the government. It shows which areas, or types of properties, need energy efficiency improvements more than others - this tells us where we should target funding and campaigns to raise people's awareness.
