National Rolls of Honour
In 1919, the National Publishing Company sought to publish a brief biography of as many of those participating in the First World War as was possible. We have made the Manchester and Salford volumes available on the 'Spinning the Web' web site:

Commonwealth War Graves Commission
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has a searchable database of the 1.7 million Commonwealth forces who died in the two world wars, plus the 67,000 Commonwealth civilian casualties who died as a result of enemy action in the Second World War.
Service Records
Please note we do not hold any army service records.
Pre 1914 and First World War service records are held by the National Archives, but many were WW1 records were destroyed by bombing in 1940.
The National Archives are making British Army Service Records (WO 363) and British Army Pension Records (WO 364) available on Ancestry.com (subscription website).
Service records for the Second World War are held at the Army Records Centre.
Manchester Regiment
The Manchester Regiment Archives are held at Tameside Local Studies Library.
We hold copies of the Manchester Regiment Gazette 1913-1958 (Local Studies 356 M5) and several books on the history of the regiment. Our Local Images collection also contains some photographs relating to the regiment.
Medals and Honours
Th London Gazette lists medal awards and, except for the Military Medal, usually gives the citation. It can be searched on-line at Gazettes Online.
Campaign medal records cards for the First World War can be searched on-line at the National Archives or on Ancestry.com (subscription web site).
Absent Voters List
We hold some absent voters lists for the City of Manchester for 1918-1923 on microfilm. They give information such as the regiment, regimental number, rank, battalion.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission
Has the war graves database online, and offers the opportunity to find details of ancestors who died in combat. By clicking on 'Debt of Honour', you can search for those who died in World War One and later conflicts.
Cyndi Howell's website includes over 240,000 links to world-wide genealogical sources, although it has a strong American bias.
Enables people to search for baptism and marriage entries throughout the British Isles. Many of the local churches are covered, including Manchester Cathedral. By selecting 'Search for Ancestors', you can search the International Genealogical Index (IGI) either for all of the British Isles, or for a particular county, and also the 1881 UK census.
This website from the UK and Ireland Genealogical Information Service provides an excellent starting point for those beginning to research their family history. It offers information on places, libraries, archives, family history societies etc, for every UK county.

Office for National Statistics
Via 'Births, Marriages and Deaths', this site gives up-to-date details on how to order birth, marriage and death certificates for England and Wales from 1837, and allows you to download application forms.
The Lancashire Online Parish Clerks Project
This project aims to extract and preserve the records from the various parishes and to provide online access to that data, free of charge. Transcripts of various parish registers are available on this web site.
