Sir Howard Bernstein Endowment Fund

The Sir Howard Bernstein Endowment Fund has been established for the benefit of young Mancunians, following a successful fundraising event to celebrate Sir Howard Bernstein’s retirement from Manchester City Council. Through the fund we aim to support the city’s young people to gain the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to succeed in education, employment and enterprise.

Over a third of children and young people in Manchester are growing up in poverty and a large number do not have the personal family and social networks that can help them move into aspirational careers. We aim to use this fund to build a better future for Manchester, with young Mancunians playing their fullest part in the economic life of the city at the heart of this.

Sir Howard is a proud Mancunian who’s vision has helped transform Manchester. This transformation is continuing and depends to a great extent on a pipeline of future talent. Sir Howard has dedicated his Endowment Fund to the people of the future; the rising stars who will help shape Manchester and develop meaningful opportunities for all.

Our first project will be focussed on supporting young people to access an extended and structured work placement during the summer months. Through this project, we hope that participants will benefit from valuable hands on work experience, the development of transferable employability skills and increased access to the professions.

Over the coming months, we will be developing a variety of projects to support social mobility amongst young people. If you would like to be involved in the consultation around project development, please do get in touch.
