Good news for the Casino

Good news for Manchester and our plans to create 3,000 jobs in the east of the city in a huge LeisureCity anchored by a regional casino. Those plans are now being reviewed by Gordon Brown.

And very helpfully, a new survey published today shows that over the last eight years there has been no increase in the number of problem gamblers in the UK. Even though there have been major changes in gambling - especially over the internet - the experts have found that there has been no increase in problems.

We believe that we have got good plans in place to manage the impact of such a casino, and that it would help to regenerate East Manchester by encouraging other industries and investments. Local people are in favour too.

So although the new prime Minister is quite right to look in detail at our proposals, we believe the time is right for us to be able to get on with the plans to bring such a facility into reality. I'll be talking to colleagues and others about this in the next few days, to see what we can do.
