Have your say on alley gate orders
We are asking for your views on alley gate orders (PSPOs) across Manchester.
These orders mean that we can retain our alley gates, which help manage access to alleyways. We want to know if they should continue.
Why we are asking for your views
In 2017, existing alleygating orders were changed into Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs).
By law, these orders must be reviewed every few years. We must also ask for feedback from those affected by the orders, such as local residents and businesses.
The orders were last reviewed in 2023.
What these orders do
The PSPOs allow us to retain the relevant alley gates, which helps to:
- reduce anti-social behaviour
- reduce crime
- keep alleyways safe
They limit access to:
- people who live next to the alley
- emergency services
- utility workers
- other approved users

What could happen next
We are not planning to remove the gates.
We are reviewing the legal orders that allow them to stay in place.
We are asking if the current PSPOs should:
- stay in place
- be extended for another 3 years (until October 2029)
Have your say
Your feedback will help us decide what happens next.

Reporting issues in alleyways
This consultation is not for requesting new alleygates, repair of existing ones or for reporting issues in the alleys.
