Vehicle renewal - hackney carriage or private hire

You can now renew your hackney carriage and private hire vehicles online using one of the forms below. Renewal letters will be emailed to owners 4 to 5 weeks before the licence is due to expire. Your vehicle and ownership details will be pre-printed on the letter, if you have recently sold your vehicle please pass the information to the new owner.

All renewal applications must be made and payment received at least 10 working days prior to the date of expiry of the licence.  Your licence is at risk if you do not renew prior to the date of expiry; a new application will need to be submitted if your licence has expired (*except in the case of hackney carriage vehicle proprietor licence). *A new application for a hackney carriage vehicle proprietor licence cannot be submitted – your licence is at risk if you do not renew it before the date of expiry regardless if you are also replacing the vehicle.

Renewals and payment must be made 10 working days before your licence expires. You'll need to submit a new application if your licence expires. Your licence is at risk if you do not renew it before the date of expiry even if you are also replacing the vehicle.

Hackney carriage

Renewal application 

• Current fee £302 * plus the cost of vehicle test(s)

Variation (replacement) and renewal application

• Current fee £320 * plus the cost of vehicle test(s)

Vehicle test fees - charged in addition to the above application fees

• Vehicle is less than 3 years old - compliance tests one per year £60
• Vehicle is 3 years old and up to 8 years old - compliance tests two per year £120
• Vehicle is 8 years and over - compliance tests three per year £180

Private hire

Renewal application

• Current fee £144 * plus the cost of vehicle test(s)

Variation (replacement) and renewal application

• Current fee £162 * plus the cost of vehicle test(s)

*Vehicle test fees - charged in addition to the above application fees

• Vehicle is less than 3 years old - compliance tests one per year £60
• Vehicle is 3 years old and up to 8 years old - compliance tests two per year £120
• Vehicle is 8 years and over - compliance tests three per year £180

You can now renew your vehicle online under three categories:

• no changes
• change​ of address
• replacement vehicle

Hackney carriage and private hire vehicles are exempt from a MoT. If you require a certificate of exemption please visit the government website to obtain a V112.
