Manchester City Council

Whalley Range

  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Place and Infrastructure

    • Help residents set up growing projects in their alleyways. These projects will create greener and more welcoming shared spaces. This will include a project in the York and Cromwell Avenue alleyway. We will also help residents along Clarendon Road find funding to support similar alleyway projects.
    • Work with St Margaret’s Primary School and William Hulme’s Grammar School to deliver School Street road‑closure events. Each school will run at least one road‑closure day by the end of the year. These events will help keep children safe and reduce air pollution.
    • Work with MCR Active to deliver an Active Street road‑closure event in the Bowes Street area. The event will promote walking, cycling, and public transport. We aim to speak directly with at least 20 residents about making greener travel choices.

    Green and Circular Economy

    • Use the Our Manchester Food Programme Grants to support at least two food growing programmes in Whalley Range this year.
    • We will help keep the Claremont Road area clean and green. We will continue working with Council teams, residents, and local businesses. This will include promoting recycling and supporting Great British Spring Clean activity.
    • Support at community activities that promote recycling and reusing. This could include events such as The Bird Box children’s clothing swap, the Boilerhouse Repair Café, or sustainable sewing sessions. We will help groups promote their events and find funding. This may include support to apply for the Your Neighbourhood Fund.

    People and Communities

    • Work with the Whalley Range and Chorlton Age Friendly Network to promote walking routes across Whalley Range throughout the year. We will also hold an event to celebrate the newly extended bench network. This will help make walking easier and more social for older residents.
    • Work with the Whalley Range Community Forum and other local groups to increase awareness of climate change. Help them find funding to deliver at least one local climate action project. This includes working with the Whalley Range Tree Action Group to publish information for residents about trees in the conservation area.
    • Encourage local schools to get involved in climate change activities. Host a climate change stall at a St Margaret’s Primary School coffee morning and help the school develop its new food growing project.
    • Ensure resident views on nature and climate change are included in the Pride in Place consultation for the Bowes Street and Claremont Road area. This will include making sure that local groups such as the Friends of Alexandra Park and Moss Side Community Allotment are involved in consultation events.
