Ward-specific objectives
Nature and Biodiversity:
- Continue to support community groups with planting and greening projects.
- Support efforts to maintain green spaces and increase biodiversity in parks. Work with Friends of Alexandra Park, Range Road Residents and Parks.
- Explore opportunities for new tree planting. Take guidance from the Growing Manchester’s Trees tree capacity study.
- Support the development of the WR CAG Tree Plan.
Young People:
- Support delivery of the permanent school streets at Manley Park and Our Lady’s R.C. Primary Schools. Explore options to make them permanent.
- Offer support to St Margaret’s C.E. Primary School to deliver a road closure event on Clean Air Day. Support their walking bus initiative.
- Support school involvement in eco activities and programmes. Work in partnership with local school groups such as the St Margaret's Eco Team and Manley Park PTA.
Transport, Air Quality, Active Travel:
- South Neighbourhood Team Officers to link with Let’s Talk Clean Air Hub. Explore opportunities for support and joint working. Share funding opportunities.
- Address barriers to active travel, in particular cycling:
- Promote cycling training.
- Offer free bike repair and maintenance at events.
- Share information to help fund security measures.
- Promote national campaigns such as Road Safety Week. Encourage involvement in activities.
- Hold at least one Active Street (road closure) event for children and families. Include climate change engagement as part of the event.
- Promote walking routes in Whalley Range. Deliver expansion of the Age Friendly bench network.
Things We Buy, Use and Throw Away:
- Work in partnership with Biffa (Waste Management) Engagement Team. Engage with residents to provide education and support recycling.
- Support and promote existing local initiatives such as the Chorlton Repair Café.
- Consider opportunities for a sustainable sewing project in Whalley Range. Explore Whalley Range Methodist Church as an option.
- Encourage involvement in the Refill Campaign from traders, residents and community groups.
- Carry out targeted engagement around recycling with residents in the Claremont Road area. Take part in the Intensive Neighbourhood Management Great British Spring Clean event.
Food:
- Work with local groups to develop new neighbourhood food growing projects. Consider venues such as the St Margaret’s Centre and Moss Side Community Allotment.
- Share funding opportunities to support local projects.
- Ensure all catered events hosted by SNT include low carbon options. Encourage any NIF-funded events to follow the same approach.
Homes and Energy Efficiency:
- Link Groundwork Energyworks Scheme into local events. Offer free energy efficiency advice and resources through the Green Doctors Programme.
- Provide energy advice support at the community hub at JNR8.
- Offer LED lightbulbs to support residents with energy efficiency at home. Promote the link to the GMCA retrofit portal eligibility checker. Enable residents to check if they qualify for free or discounted home upgrades.
Engagement, Raising Awareness, Influencing Change:
- Support activities throughout the year that help to tackle climate change.
- Take part in the Celebrate Festival. Encourage sustainable behaviours.
- Promote funding opportunities to support local climate action. Ensure Neighbourhood Investment Fund is being used to support local climate-related projects.
- Continue to embed climate engagement in activities throughout the year.
