Manchester City Council

Sharston

  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Place and Infrastructure

    • Work with Sow the City and The Manchester College to get funding and deliver the Park Wood enhancement project. Over the year complete biodiversity studies, plant bulbs, lift holly to improve ground‑level growth, and use fallen wood for natural seating and simple wood‑carving features.
    • Using Pride in Places funding, we will work with Manchester Enterprise Academy and Haveley Hey Primary School to improve the existing path through Peter’s Spinney. The upgraded path will be safe and easy to use. It will create a clear walking and cycling route between Manchester Airport, Sharston, and Northenden. This will improve sustainable travel across Wythenshawe and into South Manchester.
    • Help set up a new group in Hollyhedge Park. The group will focus on caring for the woodland area and finding funding to support this work. It will also work with local partners, including Northern Etchells and Wythenshawe Amateurs Football Club, to involve more people and share skills

    Green and Circular Economy

    • Promote the free education tours at Sharston Recycling Centre to local schools and resident groups. These tours help people learn about reducing waste, reusing items, and recycling more. Ai for at least one school or group to book and attend a visit.
    • Support the Addy Young People’s Centre to enhance their green zone for education, growing and recycling, working alongside staff and supporting funding opportunities. Assist Peel Hall Primary in managing their school woodland and securing funding to help develop it into a Forest School.
    • Promote the Men and Women in Sheds project at Crossacres Resource Centre. The project helps people make wildlife habitats, reduce loneliness, and use green space in positive ways. We will work with residents on and off site and support efforts to find funding. We will also help build links between the project and Park Wood.

    People and Communities

    • Host a climate‑themed Community Connector event with Wythenshawe Community Housing Group and other partners across Wythenshawe. The event will bring people together, support joint working, spark new ideas, and help more residents get involved in local climate action.
    • Work with Ashgate, Crossacres, St Elizabeth’s, Haveley Hey, St John Fisher, and Peel Hall Primary Schools. We will support them to join the Eco‑Schools programme. We will also encourage pupils to take part in climate and environmental activities at school and in the wider community. This will help build long‑term understanding and action.
