Ward-specific objectives
Greening and Biodiversity:
- Encourage volunteer involvement in upkeep of the improved green area of Sale Circle. Include maintenance of the planters.
- Encourage volunteer involvement to upkeep Kenworthy Woods as a designated local nature reserve.
- Target 25/26 – Hold an open day with parks to promote the woods and encourage interest.
- Work with partners to bring Rosehill Farm back into community use. Explore any funding options.
- Explore opportunities to improve Northenden District Centre. Bring planters into use. Work with Northenden Neighbourhood Forum and identify funding.
- Oversee the local area to help keep it clean, tidy, and free from fly-tipping. Encourage resident involvement.
- Target 25/26 – Host a Keep Manchester Tidy event. Work with Northenden Tenants and Residents Association on a neighbourhood clean-up day.
Children and Young People:
- Look for opportunities to improve biodiversity and natural ecosystems in local schools. Encourage registration to the schools Eco Programme. Promote Road Safety Week. Share funding for eco projects.
- Support Benchill Primary School in their eco school programme.
- Support Kids Time Nursery to register on the new early years eco programme. Support their journey.
Transport, Active Travel and Air Quality:
- Support and promote new local walking and cycling routes across the ward. Deliver Age Friendly bench route to connect Northenden residents to Wythenshawe Park.
- Encourage involvement in activities and campaigns that promote cleaner air.
- Target 25/26 – Host at least one clean air event during the year.
Things We Buy, Use and Throw Away:
- Promote reuse and upcycling with local residents, groups, community centres, and charities.
- Target 25/26 – Identify a local group to host a sustainable fashion event or repair workshop.
- Deliver local engagement across Northenden to promote the Manchester Refill Campaign.
- Target 25/26 – Sign up at least 3 new refill locations.
- Partner with Biffa to promote recycling and waste management. Attend at least one event with Biffa to encourage reuse and recycling.
Food:
- Encourage groups to deliver food sustainability projects. Share information on Neighbourhood Investment Fund and Food Insecurity Funds.
- Work with Wythenshawe Housing Group to promote ‘Gather, Eat, Move’ funding.
- Encourage support to projects promoting less food waste. Provide cooking options for less carbon-intensive meals.
- Target 25/26 – Fund at least one project that meets this criteria.
Homes and Energy Efficiency:
- Promote energy efficiency. Link residents to Groundwork’s ‘Green Doctors’ and other similar programmes and opportunities. Include at age-friendly events.
- Provide information around energy efficiency in winter warmer packs.
- Provide residents with LED lightbulbs at engagement events.
Engagement, Raising Awareness and Influencing Change:
- Encourage residents to think about ways to tackle climate change and build climate resilience.
- Target 25/26 – Host/partner at least one climate change event. Embed climate engagement in events attended by MCC Neighbourhood Officers.
- Promote funding opportunities to support local climate action projects. Include social media, printed newsletters, and email networks.
- Ensure NIF (Neighbourhood Investment Fund) is used to support local community groups to take action.
- Raise awareness of flood resilience. Share the flood advice flyers at local events. Include partners such as the Environment Agency and The Flood Hub.
- Target 25/26 – Hold a flood resilience event. Provide residents with advice to help prepare in the event of a flood.
Wythenshawe Regeneration:
- Work with the Team and Muse to promote the aspiration to become the UK’s first Positive Energy District. Promote good examples of sustainability.
- Support engagement opportunities to share developments and work towards Net Zero with local residents.
