  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and Biodiversity:

    • Support the improvement of green areas. Work with Friends of Didsbury Park, Didsbury Good Neighbours, Friends of Fog Lane Park, Friends of Fletcher Moss, and Parks Department.
    • Support Didsbury in Bloom with improvements in the neighbourhood and District Centre.
    • Work in partnership with Didsbury Civic Society to improve Parrs Wood Pocket Park.
      • Target 25/26: Create an action plan and costings for park improvements.
    • Work with Allotment lead to support Bradley Fold Allotment. Consider any funding to contribute to flood damage repairs.

    Flood Risk:

    • Work with the Environment Agency to help reduce the risk of flooding. Help develop flood defence plans.
    • Promote flood early warning alerts and updates.
    • Provide residents with flood warning advice at engagement events.

    Children and Young People:

    • Invite all schools to take part in Didsbury Climate Change Funding event.
    • Support Eco Champions at Barlow RC High School and Beaver Road Primary School. Encourage recycling.
    • Promote a morning of action with schools in Didsbury East. Tackle idling, illegal parking, and encourage sustainable travel.
    • Organise a school street trial on Clean Air Day with Beaver Road Primary School. Include air quality messages, anti-idling, and active travel.
    • Provide school anti-idling signs. Purchase with Neighbourhood Investment Fund (NIF) grant.
    • Work in partnership with Education Department. Encourage school participation in Eco Programmes, Green School Networks, and other related initiatives.
    • Encourage tree planting with City of Trees.
    • Promote school trips to Longley Lane Recycling Centre.

    Transport, Active Travel, Air Quality:

    • Encourage active travel. Promote opportunities for residents to leave the car at home.
    • Hold a road closure ‘Active Street’ event for young people and their families.
    • Encourage involvement in environmental campaigns.
      • Target 25/26: Organise a clean air activity during Road Safety Week (Nov 2025). Promote positive impacts on air quality.

    Things We Buy, Use, and Throw Away:

    • Work with community centres and charities to re-use and recycle.
    • Invite Biffa Engagement Team to community events to promote recycling.
    • Encourage residents to donate unwanted items.
    • Promote Manchester Refill campaign. Help avoid unnecessary packaging and single-use plastic.
      • Work to increase the number of local businesses signed up to Refill. Ensure businesses already signed up are visible to consumers. Promote campaign to Didsbury Traders Group.
      • Promote the campaign to community groups and residents. Encourage them to download the app and refill on the go.
    • Promote tours at local Recycling Centres to encourage recycling further.

    Food:

    • Reduce food waste. Promote and support the work of local food banks, charities, and pantries.
    • Signpost to appropriate sources of funding.
    • Promote less carbon-intensive meals at events. Consider seasonal fruit and veg and eating less meat and dairy.
    • Continue to make recipe cards available at events.
    • Take smoothie bike to event(s). Demonstrate what can be done to reduce waste.
    • Support ‘grow your own’ food planting projects.

    Homes and Energy Efficiency:

    • Continue to promote energy efficiency.
    • Host/Partner a local event. Include energy efficiency advice for residents. Invite ‘Green Doctors’ to provide a range of support to save energy. May include Home Assessments.
    • Provide LED light bulbs where needed.
    • Support the new carbon improvement works. Include installation of a new boiler at Didsbury Library.
    • Share GM retrofit portal. Encourage residents to make direct enquiries for any support available.

    Engagement, Raise Awareness, Influencing Change:

    • Continue engagement raising awareness to help influence change. Consider partnership working at events.
    • Consider the impact of extreme weather on health. Work jointly with health colleagues.
    • Hold a stall at local events such as Didsbury Pride and Didsbury Festival. Promote behaviours that reduce carbon footprint.
    • Encourage involvement in environmental campaigns.
    • Ensure NIF supports local climate action.
      • Target 25/26: Consider holding a climate-related funding event. Encourage residents, schools, and community groups to take part.
