Ancoats Hub and Green

  1. “Ancoats Green is the latest park in our city centre to be created or refurbished to make sure our residents have access to brilliant green spaces. The Green will be the heart of this community, a place local people can take pride in, spend time with family and friends, and find a respite from the bustle of the city – all in a low traffic, sustainable neighbourhood.”

  6. Background

The Ancoats Mobility Hub and the adjacent Ancoats Green are essential components of the future development of Ancoats Phase 3. The Hub provides parking for both residents and visitors, which helps reduce local road traffic and promotes sustainable transport options. Additionally, Ancoats Green, along with the greening of the surrounding public realm, enhances the area for pedestrians and introduces recreational spaces. These developments aim to create climate-positive outcomes, such as reducing air pollution, promoting sustainable travel options and supporting more biodiversity.

  7. Projects

Ancoats Green Park features open spaces, new play areas, and accessible play equipment. This park is part of a larger £40 million redevelopment programme by Manchester City Council aimed at revitalising the upper Ancoats area. The Green aims to act as a catalyst for Ancoats, with plans for further development and housing set to be built around the park. The Ancoats Mobility Hub also showcases Manchester's commitment to green infrastructure, sustainable designs, and development that promotes climate-friendly lifestyles. The Mobility Hub includes 102 electric chargers, 400 rooftop solar panels, a parcel delivery hub, secure bike storage and showers all designed to encourage active travel and reduce congestion in the city centre. Additionally, the Hub will incorporate even more greening, featuring two large-scale green walls, public realm plantings, and exterior vines and plants.

  8. Outcomes

This project officially opened in May 2025. Although outcomes will take some time, Ancoats Green is expected to encourage residents and newcomers to engage with nature, view walking as a preferred way of travel to and from Manchester city centre and improve both mental and physical well-being while enhancing air quality and biodiversity. The Mobility Hub shares in some of these aspirations and aims to promote nature and set a higher standard for greener development. One notable feature of the Hub is the green walls that span the entire height of the eight-story building. The wall plants were carefully chosen for their ability to absorb pollution, tolerate urban conditions, and flower year-round. Just one square metre of wall planting is predicted to extract 2.3 kg of carbon dioxide and produce 1.7 kg of oxygen while filtering out dangerous toxins. A key outcome the Hub seeks to achieve is a reduction in traffic through Ancoats and the city centre by offering a park-and-ride-style alternative and encouraging cycling over car usage. Overall, both project elements aim to promote green infrastructure and climate-friendly infrastructure in Ancoats, serving as a catalyst for regeneration that focuses on greener urban design and nature-friendly solutions.

  9. Future

The investment in the Ancoats Green and Mobility Hub is part of a broader public realm programme and a continuation of the regeneration of the Ancoats and New Islington neighbourhoods. The Hub and Green aim to create a new focal point for the Ancoats and New Islington Canal area, seamlessly linking green spaces and sustainable logistical infrastructure to the Council’s first housing development located at No. 1 Ancoats Green. the Hub and park projects will connect neighbouring areas, fostering accessible communities and facilitating the development of 1,500 new homes, including over 500 currently under construction.
