Manchester’s global connections

Manchester is one of the most diverse and welcoming cities in the UK.

Our city is known across the world for being the birthplace of the industrial revolution. We're known for music, culture, and sport and for world class universities and research.

Residents from all over the world make Manchester the vibrant and diverse city it is today. We are proud of our identity that has shaped our past, is enriching our present, and inspiring our future.

There are many Consulates in Manchester supporting our international communities. We are home to one of the oldest Consular Associations in the world. This shows the city’s historic role as a hub for international diplomacy and cooperation.

Our current international partnerships span a wide range of areas. We work closely with local institutions and organisations to:

  • foster innovation,
  • drive economic growth; and
  • celebrate cultural exchange.

Manchester supports the Greater Manchester International Strategy. This strategy guides us on our way to being:

  • a leading city-region in the UK and globally; and
  • an international influencer in green and digital.

We work with:

  • the UK Government,
  • the British Council,
  • Marketing Manchester

and many more to support international policy and partnerships.

Our partner cities

Manchester has strong ties to people, cities and organisations in Europe, the USA, and Asia.

Working with and learning from others helps Manchester to grow and improve.  We have longstanding links with several international cities for:

  • civic,
  • political,
  • cultural,
  • economic and educational purposes; and
  • to support Manchester’s priorities.
