Wuhan, China
Manchester formed a partnership with Wuhan in 1986.
This partnership aimed to strengthen economic ties and foster understanding through:
- education,
- sports; and
- culture.
Today, the partnership focuses on climate change and collaboration between universities and industry.
Highlights:
- A joint education institute between Manchester Metropolitan University and Hubei University in Wuhan has been established.
- The UK National Committee on China (UKNCC) launched the UK China Hydrogen Energy Collaboration Forum in Manchester in 2022. This marked the 50th anniversary of relationships between the UK and China. Following this, annual Forums have taken place in Manchester focussing on Clean Energy.
- Groups of youngsters called Wuhan Little Diplomats have visited Manchester primary schools several times. This resulted in educational and people- to- people connections, building mutual understanding.
- The City of Manchester swim team have taken part in the annual Yangtze River Crossing Festival since 2017.
- International Friendship Cities Association, and the “Urban EU-China City Powerhouse Project Award.
