Global networks
Eurocities
Manchester has been a longstanding member of Eurocities. Eurocities is a network of large European cities that gives cities a voice at European level. This is especially important now that the UK is no longer a member of the European Union.
Being part of Eurocities helps Manchester stay connected to current European issues. The network focuses on priority areas that align with Manchester’s goals, such as:
- inclusion,
- equality,
- poverty; and
- sustainability.
It also has six thematic forums:
- Culture,
- Digital, Economic Development,
- Environment,
- Mobility; and
- Social Affairs.
Mayors for Peace
Mayors for Peace was set up in 1982 by the Mayor of Hiroshima during the UN Conference on Disarmament in New York. Manchester joined the organisation in 1984. We built strong ties with Hiroshima and Nagasaki before becoming Vice President in 2001. We were Lead City in 2013 before setting up the UK and Ireland Chapter in 2015.
Manchester currently serves as Vice Chair of the new European Chapter. We work closely with nine other European lead cities on:
- creating more peaceful cities and communities and
- ending nuclear weapons worldwide.
In 1980, Manchester became the world's first nuclear-free city.
