Talk English Volunteer Programme

The Talk English project is working with people with low levels of English to help them improve their language skills, access services and get more involved in the community.

The project is funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) until March 2019. Manchester Adult Education Service, part of Manchester City Council (MCC) leads a consortium of local authorities and further education colleges in the North West, Yorkshire and Humber, the Midlands and six boroughs of London who deliver the Talk English project.

There are several ways people can get involved in the project.  On our Talk English Courses for beginners, which are taught by volunteers, people can improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. There are also regular Talk English Activities for people learning English, so they can meet others, practise speaking and do something fun and different.  Talk English activities take place in libraries, museums, galleries, children's centres and local parks.

There are courses and activities taking place all over Manchester.  To find out more, visit

Through the project we recruit, train and support volunteers to deliver Talk English courses and activities. If you'd like to volunteer on the project, go to
